Interfacing a Shortwave Radio
to the SE-3

The SE-3 Mk IV is an external synchronous detector and audio amplifier that can be used with any shortwave radio. The radio may need an interface kit to feed the SE-3, which requires a 455 kHz IF input for operation. The interface kit in no way changes the operation of the receiver, it only takes the last IF, just before detection, and mixes it either down or up in frequency to 455 kHz. This interface kit, called the MIX-3, may also require a buffer amp with a clean-up IF filter to remove any undesired mixing products or local oscillator signals. The MIX-3 sells for $95.00 and the BUF-3 is $50.00. These are usually installed in the radio in question, but sometimes are mounted externally in a shielded mini-box.
